Suggestions of the real thing

When the smell of autumn floats through an open window and fills the house.
When they both sleep a little late, and the coffee’s hot and fresh, and the house is still.
When my baby boy’s smile seems to say, “I find you amusing, Mother.”
When my daughter looks up from playing, and I know she’s checking to see that I’m still near, and I’m filled with gratitude that I get to be the person she pauses to look for.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the world is a fallen place.

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.”

РC. S. Lewis, an oft quoted passage from Mere Christianity (emphasis mine)
